      How this was counted

      This is a recommendation-frequency guide, not a claim about objective quality. It covers currently operating sandwich venues inside Amsterdam municipality and was researched on 13 September 2026.

      • Boundary. Amsterdam municipality only, which since 2022 includes Weesp. Amstelveen, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Groningen, Hoorn and Brabant venues that Redditors praised are listed under exclusions.
      • What counts as a sandwich. Filled bread ordered as a sandwich or broodje in any tradition: Dutch broodjeszaak and butcher rolls, eetsalon classics such as broodje kroket and halfom, Italian panini, focaccia and schiacciata, deli pastrami and sandos, bagels, bánh mì, döner served in bread, and Surinamese toko broodjes. Not counted: kapsalon, durum and wraps, pita and falafel, Turkish pizza, burgers including fried-chicken burgers, steamed buns, and the two broodje-haring threads, which were treated as a fish-stall category.
      • Ranking line. Only places named by two or more distinct users are ranked, mapped and verified; 74 places named once are listed unverified.
      • One person, one vote per place. Usernames were deduplicated case-insensitively across all 45 threads. A user who praised a venue in three threads counts once for it; a user who praised several places counts once for each.
      • Only affirmative endorsements count. First-person praise and unambiguous agreement replies (“this”, “+1”, “100% agree”). Not counted: upvotes, questions, hearsay (“a friend swears by”), venues only present in the question, price-only or operational remarks, deleted users, bots, negative or mixed comments, and unnamed stalls (“the Surinamese shop on the Dapperstraat”). Post authors count only when the post reports their own positive experience.
      • Counts are verified minimums. Reddit blocks direct access from this machine, so every thread was read through the Arctic Shift archive, which returns the full comment set including removed ones but can miss comments posted after its last crawl. A displayed 12 means “at least 12 named endorsers in the auditable corpus”. Three endorsements of C&C Asian Market were merged from location descriptions (“the Asian supermarket at the east end of the Albert Cuyp”), and “Cafe Waterloo” and “Café Waterlooplein” were merged as Lunchcafé Waterloo.
      • Dissent is shown, not subtracted. A negative comment does not remove a vote; the count of dissenting comments appears under the score. Caldi e Freddi, Van Dobben, Leeman, Little Saigon and Ô Mai all drew dissenters.
      • Hours are separate verification. For the 18 venues whose official sites publish hours, those are used and linked. For the rest the linked Google Maps listing was read on 13 September 2026 and is labelled as such; Van Dobben’s site shows two schedules. Multi-branch places show one branch, flagged in the row. Hours change often.
      • Corpus breadth. Thread search covered r/Amsterdam, r/Netherlands, r/thenetherlands, r/AmsterdamEnts, r/eatsandwiches, r/travel and r/solotravel with sandwich, broodje, bánh mì, döner, deli, lunch and cheap-eats terms. Threads outside r/Amsterdam rarely name Amsterdam sandwich venues, so 41 of the 45 counted threads are from r/Amsterdam; the corpus spans 2013 to August 2026 and skews to 2022 onward.
